Are You an 'Emotional Eater'?

Emma Murphy MIACP - Psychotherapist and Emotional/Binge Eating Specialist

What is emotional eating, and why does it happen?

  • Emotional eating is a response to feelings, not physical hunger.
  • Eating can be a default response to all emotions – positive and negative, or just negative feelings.
  • Often it’s hard to tell when you feel properly hungry or full.
  • Regular emotional eating often happens alongside regularly dieting or restricting your food.
  • Low mood, high anxiety, weight gain and gut issues can also be present.
I learned to be kind to myself. I wouldn’t say the things that I say to myself after a binge, to my friend if she was going through the same thing.
